The Online Profitability Problem
Many online sellers begin their new venture with excitement. At first they have high expectations and energy. They may list many items but, over time, realize that their listings are producing hit-or-miss results. After several more months of less-than-expected results, their enthusiasm begins to fade. They continue selling the same items with disappointing results until one day they conclude, "You can't make any money online." Then sadly they quit.
The Root of the Problem
If you can relate to this scenario, then I have good news for you. You can solve your profitability problem.
First, you need to understand that the root of your problem is simply this - either:
1) You are selling the wrong products (low demand or too much competition), or
2) You are selling them the wrong way.
Fine-tuning your product descriptions will not solve the problem of limited demand or too much competition. Your products will remain unprofitable.
Imagine that you have decided to open a shoe store in a new strip mall. You didn't check the location. You just signed the lease, ordered your products, and are now ready for the sales to roll in. Then you discover that of the 20 stores in the mall, every one of them is also a shoe store selling the same shoes you are. How well do you think you will do?
While that example may seem obvious, the vast majority of online sellers are in fact, doing the very same thing. They never check out the demand, competition, or profitability of the products before they purchase them for resale.
"Look, here is a cheap, cool, fun, or unusual product. Let's try selling this one!" So they list it on their website, eBay or Amazon and cross their fingers. There is no proven method to their product selection decision making. That is the root problem.
Question: What do you call a fun hit-or-miss hobby that involves winning or losing money?
Answer: Gambling!

Let’s look at an important fact. There are millions of online professionals making a very nice living either full or part time. So the question is not whether it CAN be done, but HOW is it done? Just what is it that all those professionals know that other sellers don’t?
As an active and experienced online seller for many years now, I have certainly made my share of mistakes along the way. I was determined, however, to make online selling work for me. Eventually and fortunately, I discovered what I was doing wrong and how to do it right.
